Donald Trump admitted for the first time to repaying his personal lawyer who paid $130,000 to a porn star and former mistress of his to keep her quiet in the days leading up to the election. The admission opens Trump up to potential campaign finance violations considering it was made mere weeks before the 2016 Presidential election. Trump has long denied he knew anything about the payment made by his lawyer, but changed his tune after his lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, admitted on live television that Trump repaid his lawyer for the payment.

Quote | The admission opens the door to potential campaign finance violations.

"Mr. Cohen, [my] attorney, received a monthly retainer [as repayment for $130,000 he paid to a porn star to keep her from going public about an affair before the election], not from the campaign and having nothing to do with the campaign, from which he entered into, through reimbursement, a private contract between two parties, known as a non-disclosure agreement, or NDA. These agreements are very common among celebrities and people of wealth. In this case it is in full force and effect and will be used in Arbitration for damages against Ms. Clifford ([Stormy] Daniels). The agreement was used to stop the false and extortionist accusations made by her about an affair, despite already having signed a detailed letter admitting that there was no affair. Prior to its violation by Ms. Clifford and her attorney, this was a private agreement. Money from the campaign, or campaign contributions, played no roll in this transaction."
