Donald Trump opined that putting drug dealers to death will help solve the ever expanding opioid overdose crisis in the United States, even though many people currently addicted to opioids obtain their drug from a physician. Multiple peer-reviewed studies have come up with no evidence that harsh drug penalties, up to and including the death sentence, play any factor in curbing access to drug abuse and drug abuse rates overall.

“The answer is you have to have strength and you have to have toughness. The drug dealers, drug pushers—they’re really doing damage.” he said. “Some countries have a very, very tough penalty.
